Description of Process for this Submission
These pieces are an exploration of the intersection between variable digital typeface design, CNC manufacturing technology, and the exploration of letters as expressive forms as pioneered by the likes of Emil Ruder and Jack Stauffacher. The compositions began as pencil sketches that were then developed digitally using a static typeface (Sabine Antiqua) and Ohno Type Company's Obviously Variable to create typographic compositions that responded to a narrow compositional space. The variable typeface’s letterforms were customized to the compositional space, and then all of the type was carved on a CNC router, with the final mono prints brayer inked and printed on a 26" x 36" showcard press.
